Boyd
Loyal and hardworking, Boyd is an orphan hired by Dr. James Freeman Clarke in 1844 to help with soul photography experiments at his secretive Boston laboratory. Lacking formal education, Boyd often brings unexpected humor by pointing out the absurd nature of Dr. Clarke’s schemes, catching common sense errors in the reasoning of the brilliant but impractical Dr. Clarke. Boyd’s invaluable assistance eventually takes him all the way to Dendera, Egypt, where he becomes one of the first people on Earth to witness the designs for the Seelenleiter, the Pharaohs’ Soul Ladder, which is later stolen by the Nazi in World War II.
